“Retrospective of S-” — a project by artist Sam Messer, associate dean of the Yale School of Art, and writer Jonathan Safran Foer — will open at the Fredericks and Freiser gallery on June 21.
S– is a fictional painter created by Safran Foer. Her life is played out in 10 wall texts written by Foer and 10 corresponding paintings curated by Messer. The paintings are by different artists and parallel the significant changes that S– experiences throughout her life, depicted from 1964 to 2010, from the age of 14 to 60.
The artists in the role of S– include: Francesca Lo Russo, Josephine Messer, Judith Linhares, Njideka Akunyili, Caitlin Cherry, Chie Fueki, Rochelle Feinstein, Natalie Frank, Jackie Gendel, and Jennifer Packer.
Safran Foer is the author of many works including, “Everything is Illuminated,” “Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close,” “Eating Animals,” and “New American Haggadah.”
Messer will be a 2012/2013 artist-in-residence at the Marie Walsh Sharpe Foundation Space Program in Brooklyn, New York. He is also currently designing characters for a feature film based on Noah.
